Welcome to First Call Pediatrics! To begin our Partner Spotlight series, we are honored to introduce Dr. Winston Sheen, whose remarkable journey, dedication to families, and unwavering commitment to children’s health has helped shaped the very heart of our practice.
Dr. Sheen’s story begins in a small West Texas town—one so remote that traveling to a larger city meant a 4 to 5-hour drive across open plains. Life there was simple but full of deep-rooted values and unforgettable lessons. Dr. Sheen spent much of his childhood working alongside his father on their family ranch, tending to cattle, sheep, and goats through blistering heat, frigid mornings, and everything in between. Those long days carved into him a profound sense of responsibility, discipline, and pride in hard work. While the ranch taught him resilience and grit, it also revealed that his future lay beyond the fences and fields. Even as early as second grade, he felt a pull toward medicine—a dream so certain it fueled him through every step of his education.
After graduating from Texas A&M University, Dr. Sheen earned his Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. He then moved to New York, completing his pediatric residency at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola in 2012. His passion for caring for the most fragile young lives led him to pursue a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, which he completed in 2015.
It was during this period of intense training that Dr. Sheen’s calling truly crystallized. He found himself drawn to the care of critically ill newborns—tiny patients who depend entirely on the vigilance, skill, and compassion of their medical team. He discovered not only a love for the science and precision of neonatology but also a deep connection to the families whose lives are turned upside down by unexpected complications and frightening diagnoses. The opportunity to stand beside families during their hardest days became one of the great honors of his life.
Over the past 11 years, Dr. Sheen has cared for newborns in some of the most stressful and vulnerable moments imaginable. Board‑certified in both Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics, he has developed a reputation for clinical excellence paired with extraordinary empathy. He most recently served as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Florida from 2015 to 2025, where he helped shape the development of future pediatricians through both bedside teaching and classroom instruction in the College of Medicine’s pediatric clerkship.
Dr. Sheen also held a leadership role as the Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Transport Team at UF Health Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital. In this capacity, he oversaw the critical transport of newborns requiring specialized care, work that demands sharp decision-making, precise coordination, and a steady, compassionate presence. His calm under pressure and his dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of fragile infants earned him deep respect among colleagues, nurses, and families alike.
Yet what truly distinguishes Dr. Sheen is his belief that neonatal care must extend beyond medical procedures. He is widely recognized as a steadfast advocate for families, taking time to explain complex medical conditions in ways that empower parents. He understands that the NICU can be overwhelming and scary, especially for first-time parents, and he goes above and beyond to offer reassurance, clarity, and emotional grounding. Through this he recognizes the need for better newborn pediatric care at home, to help in reducing the stress parents feel. Whether he is guiding a family through a difficult decision, answering questions late into the night, or offering quiet support during a moment of fear, Dr. Sheen brings humanity and heart to every interaction. His patients’ families often speak of him as not just their child’s doctor, but as a source of strength during their most uncertain days.
Outside the hospital walls, Dr. Sheen is a devoted husband and father to three spirited and wonderful daughters who inspire him every single day. Their curiosity, drive, and kindness remind him of the beauty and resilience of childhood—and they reinforce his commitment to providing the type of pediatric care he wants for his own family. Despite his expertise as a neonatologist, he found the process of seeking care for his daughters surprisingly impersonal: navigating phone trees, waiting for callbacks, struggling to schedule appointments, and being directed to urgent care after hours. These frustrations illuminated the gaps in traditional pediatric care and deeply influenced what he wanted to build next.
Drawing on his experiences as a physician, leader, and parent, Dr. Sheen and his partners envisioned a completely different model of pediatric care—one grounded in relationships, accessibility, and true partnership with families. First Call Pediatrics was created to fulfill that vision. The concierge pediatric care model brings pediatric care directly into the home, where children feel safest and most comfortable, and ensures families have direct access to their provider when they need it most. No phone trees, no barriers, no uncertainty, just genuine care delivered with compassion and expertise.
Dr. Sheen’s philosophy is simple: families deserve pediatric care that feels personal, responsive, and deeply trustworthy. And that philosophy shapes everything we do at First Call Pediatrics. He is excited to be First Call Pediatrics pediatrician near Ponte Vedra, FL.
