Pediatric Sleep Health
This theoretical review expands Buysse’s adult-focused definition of sleep health and applies it to pediatrics, emphasizing that children’s sleep is shaped by developmental changes and a wide range of socio‑ecological factors beyond their control. The authors argue that all five original SATED dimensions—satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration—are relevant for children, but propose a sixth pediatric‑specific dimension, sleep‑related behaviors, due to the major role of routines, electronics use, caffeine, and parent‑child interactions. They highlight substantial developmental differences in sleep needs, timing, napping patterns, and self‑report accuracy, as well as disparities linked to race, environment, and family context. Overall, the review introduces the Peds B‑SATED framework and calls for improved clinical screening, caregiver education, and research to better understand and support pediatric sleep health across diverse populations.
