Allergies or Cold Symptoms?

Colds and allergies can cause similar symptoms in children, but they have different causes: colds are contagious viral infections, while allergies are immune responses to triggers like pollen, pet dander, or grass.
Fever, fatigue, body aches, and symptoms lasting 10–14 days point toward a cold, whereas itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, clear nasal drainage, and symptoms lasting for weeks are more typical of allergies.
Seasonal allergies are uncommon in children under one year old, making cold viruses more likely in infants.
If symptoms improve quickly with an antihistamine, allergies are likely; little improvement suggests a cold and supportive care is recommended.
